In anticipation of Fly Lo’s You’re Dead! LP forthcoming via Warp Records , here is a little teaser

Pre-order the release in 12″ and digital formats here .

Traumer | Takt LP

Here is a little preview of Paris-based Traumer’s Takt LP out April 24th on Herzblut Recordings .

“Takt” the title cut is a thirteen-minute instrumental bluesy house odyssey with warm live organ and guitar.

When I first listened to “Azure”, I felt chills coursing down my spine. Imagine if Phillip Glass made a hot techno house single employing his signature layered piano loop sound, and brought in a soulful sax player with deadly chops to solo over top the entire jam. That’s my best attempt at describing this one.

“Flume” delivers classic dark 90′s house vibes–a funky muted bass riff, rich moody Korg M1 style piano chord stabs, percussive vocal chops, and a relentless rolling shuffle.

To be honest, I’m still getting to know the rest of the album. Nevertheless, it stands out to me as one of the most exceptional full-length dance releases that I’ve laid ears on so far this year. For me, it’s brilliant. It’s too bad that these previews are so short because you have to hear these tracks in full to appreciate their depth. But better a snippet than nothing–am I right?

Pomo | Vibrator

Montréal-based Pomo’s latest self-released single “Vibrator” can barely contain itself. The kick knocks and rolls. The percussion spits and sprays. Manic chord stabs dance with ecstatic re-pitched diva vox. In some ways it reminds me of Hudson Mohawke .

Montrealers can catch him at the opening night of Melt MTL at Blizzarts on Thursday, March 13th.

Royal Dust | Royal (Ricardo Villalobos remix)

Ricardo Villalobos ‘s take on Royal Dust’s “Royal” is a languorous jazzy dark trip into the depths of your mind.

Jameszoo | Poek

Jameszoo

Jameszoo ’s Jheronimus EP follows his 2012 release, Faaveelaa, which received nods from The Gaslamp Killer and Mark Pritchard (Warp, Hyperdub, etc…) to name two. Inspired by the fantastical images painted by the Dutch artist from whom his album takes its name, Jheronimus sees Jameszoo experimenting once again with disparate jazz, folk, and electronic elements that somehow, albeit odd, balance each other out. Listen to “Poek,” the standout track, below and if it moves you, experience the entire EP here .

Juj | Walnut LP

juj

[Juj]

Following up heheh. (2009, WEDIDIT) and Slack (2010, WEDIDIT), Juj , an L.A.-based beatsmith and member of Shlohmo’s WEDIDIT Collective, is poised to release his latest LP offering entitled Walnut via HUH WHAT & WHERE on February 9th. In anticipation, he has shared a cut from the release–”Waves”–as well as a music video for another cut–”Micro”.

With each successive release, Juj has continued to refine his cheeky endearing take on psychedelic jazz-influenced instrumental hip-hop–artfully blending warm crackling textures, sampled instruments, vocal snippets, and disjointed rhythms.

I’m very much looking forward to listening through Walnut upon it’s release next Friday.

Bonobo | Cirrus

In anticipation of the release of his upcoming LP– The Northern Borders –in April via Ninja Tune , Simon Green, a.k.a. Bonobo , shared this hypnotic cut entitled “Cirrus”.

The track opens up with a metallic pitched percussion groove that is reminiscent of the introduction to Caribou’s “Bowls” from the Swim LP (Merge, 2010). The track steadily builds momentum as additional melodic and organic percussive elements are introduced and as the warm smooth bass tone evolves to take on a gritty snarl (2:10–3:14). The gradual escalation of the energy of the song reminds me of Four Tet’s work on tracks such as “Lion”.

Bonobo will kick off his North-American tour in early April and then he will head over to Europe to play a handful of dates in mid-May. I had the opportunity to listen to one of his dj sets at Fortune Sound Club in Vancouver this past summer, and people we’re bouncing off the walls and ceiling. In other words, I would definitely be enthusiastic about attending another one of his performances in the future.

Nick Wisdom | Big Shiny House EP

Vancouver-based beat-maker Nick Wisdom has been inspiring me with the quality and prolificacy of his creative output in recent months. Through Jellyfish Recordings , Wisdom has put out a string of polished EPs under his own moniker, as well as under Potatohead People , (which is a collaborative effort with AstroLogical ). He has continued to refine his youthful sonic blend of instrumental hip-hop, jazz, and R&B with each successive release.

Following up Nightlines and his sophomore solo effort– Vibe Guru –Wisdom released Big Shiny House EP on January 15th of this new year.

“Using his Fender Rhodes, dusty samples and mellow synth tones, Nick creates a smooth jazzy vibe perfect for late nights or sunny afternoons.”

“Pulse” and “Snowflakes” ft. AstroLogical are my personal favourites. “Pulse” hums and skips along infectiously with warm plucks of an electric guitar, shimmering synth arpeggios, and a silky legato lead over top of a lush bed of tranquilizing Rhodes tremolo and a smooth sub-bass underbelly.

“Snow Flakes” comes on like a valium and a tasty cocktail on a warm secluded beach with good company.

Have a listen for yourself.

Mix: Archie Pelago | Live at The Public Assembly

[Kroba, Cosmo D, and Hirshi of Archie Pelago]

Brooklyn-based trio Archie Pelago , strive to combine their varied musical backgrounds of jazz and classical, and apply the ideas to the endless possibilities of electronic beat music. On June 22nd, 2012, The group preformed live in Brooklyn’s Public Assembly, utilizing all of their instruments: a trumpet, saxophone, cello,  turn-tables (Serato), and Ableton live. The result is a fantastic, hour-long genre-melting groove which is appropriate to be rinsed at almost any occasion. My favourite moment in the mix is Archie Pelago’s own track, Brown Oxford , coming in roughly at the 9 minute mark.
