[Boddika a.k.a. Al Green]

I recently learned that Boddika took his name from the bad guy in Robocop – ‘Clarence Boddiker’. Given that his music is downright sinister and colder than ice, it is appropriate that Boddika has appropriated the name of a villain.

On these two cuts from his upcoming release for Swamp81Boddika stays true to the stripped-down punishing percussion-oriented style that he has become known for…

“My influences are mainly old school electro beats from hip hop and then Detroit electro producers such as Drexciya and Aux88. But I’ve always had a keen interest in Chicago House and Detroit Techno, as well as 90′s & 80′s Dance and Electronica, like AFX, Autechre, Lisa Lisa Cult Jam, Prince. Pretty much everything I like inspires me; as a whole I just do what I feel like doing when I’m in the studio, and that’s where the music comes from. Working alone has been very inspiring for me.”

Fort Romeau | Jetée

Fort Romeau

“Jetée” is the sprawling new house cut from London’s Fort Romeau. The single, deemed “fit for both large sound systems and epic summer travels” by the good people over at Ghostly, is Mike Greene’s debut release on their roster.

Shigeto | Detroit Part 1

“Detroit Part 1″ is the first single from Shigeto‘s No Better Time Than Now full-length forthcoming on Ghostly International August 19th.

“Detroit” is a warm picturesque journey–like driving through the city after work on a summer eve while the sun is going down… Zach Shigeto Saginaw, a.k.a. Shigeto, layers spastic synth arpeggios, improvised melodies on a warm plucked idiophone–(a kalimba is my guess) and jazzy melancholic Rhodes chords with pulsing tremolo over top a slow rolling break-beat.

Can’t wait for more–

Todd Terje | Strandbar

artworks-000048017737-hifbls-t500x500

Following up “It’s the Arps” and the collab with Lindström and Diskjokke– “Lanzarote”, Todd Terje offers us a gleaming vivacious summery cut entitled “Strandbar”. It’s likely that the crowd at Sónar danced to this joint last night during the B2B dj-set from Lindstrøm and Todd Terje.

Terje includes a samba version, a disco version, and a ‘bonus’ version on the EP release, which dropped two days ago via his very own Olsen Records.

The disco version effortlessly holds my attention as it breathes and builds progressively over eight and a half minutes. On this track Terje delivers what he is known to do best (on tracks such as last summer’s “Inspector Norse”)–he balances a simple funky four-to-the-floor groove with a jubilant symphony of analog synths.

“Strandbar” is a Norwegian word that can be translated as “beach-bar.”

Jonwayne | Notes to Myself

Following up last month’s surly single “Numbers on the Hoard” released via Stones Throw, L.A.-based producer\mc prodigy Jon Wayne, a.k.a. Jonwayne, sprays eloquently over top a J Dilla joint and offers some down-home words of wisdom.
