Simian Mobile Disco | Tangents

Here is a taste of a single off SMD’s Whorl LP coming up September 9th on Anti Records… You can buy a digital copy of the track over here .

SMD & Roman Flugel | Hachinoko

Simian Mobile Disco teamed up with Frankfurt’s Roman Flugel to produce this manic buzzing nine minute techno workout…

““Hachinoko” originate from Japan, and are a sweet delicacy, so perfect for our dessert – the larvae of bees or wasps, carefully harvested from their hives and cooked in sugar and soy sauce. The taste is said to be crunchy on the outside, with a gooey centre and a smoky finish…”

There is also a b-side, which they haven’t shared as of yet.

Simian Mobile Disco & Cosmin TRG | Surströmming

DELICACIES

Earlier today, Simian Mobile Disco put forth “Surströmming,” the A-side of their forthcoming collaboration with Cosmin TRG . According to the press release, the track is titled after “the most putrid smelling food substance in the world,” which isn’t that much of a surprise considering that Simian’s Delicacies imprint boasts a number of releases named after obscure cuisine.

Surströmming/Sannakji will be released on December 9.

Video: Simian Mobile Disco & Bicep | Sacrifice

Simian Mobile Disco and Bicep have come together and collaborated on what is to be the “Sacrifice” EP, forthcoming June 10th on SMD’s Delacacies label. Two days ago, the collective team of producers released visual accompaniment for the a-side of the release; watch a falling 3-dimensional square disappear and re-appear while passing through all sorts of visual delights in a grey-scaled virtual space- all while synchronized to the aforementioned granular 4 and a half minute track.

Retrospective | 2012

We are a day late on delivering this, but we had to wait up until the 31st to pull this thing together – just in case we needed to make any last minute additions (and also because we are habitually disorganized and tardy).

After a haphazard electronic congress amongst the various selectas’ in our slightly dysfunctional family, we put together a collage of the music that moved us in MMXII.

We didn’t attempt to rank these releases–nor to affix to each of them a rating–because it is our view that this sort of enterprise is not meaningful. We assure you that we have vetted all of it. Finding high-grade jams below should be straight-forward–like shooting fish in a barrel. We invite you to trust us and to peruse with an open mind and curiosity.

With love–

SONAR | Barcelona 2012

[ the official image of Sonar; a still from Sergio Caballero's forthcoming film, 'La Distanca' ]

The city is buzzing. Club-rats, artists, and industry folk of every rank have flocked here to witness what is widely considered to be one of, if not the most influential three days in the world of electronica, internationally. We’ll see about that, as low-life will be on site, reporting the tides and triumphs of this so anticipated celebration of the multi-media arts.

Sónar once again makes Barcelona the world capital
of electronic culture: the festival presents more than 150 proposals in its programme, including music, exhibitions, screenings and activities for professionals based around the technology applied to artistic creation. The music line-up includes essential classics, experimentalists with a unique profile and an extensive representation of the new forms of house, contemporary electronic pop and the multiple derivations of bass music .”

(via Sonar )

This year promises a typically astounding line up that includes performances from Flying Lotus , Jacques Greene , James Blake , Modeselektor , Hot Chip , The Roots , Sinjin Hawke , Nguzunguzu , Salva , Jack Beats , Maya Jane Coles , Azari & III , Kode 9 , Julio Bashmore , Blawan , Simian Mobile Disco , Nicholas Jaar and Darkside … to only name a few.

Be sure to grab the 4 track Sonar 2012 Sampler , courtesy of Bleep.com, before it’s taken down midnight tonight.

Simian Mobile Disco | Unpatterns LP

James and Jas of Simian Mobile Disco dropped the Unpatterns LP today on Wichita Recordings . The duo will be conjuring up magic live via subtractive synthesis at Fabric in London this Friday evening to celebrate the release; (tickets and info here ).

The publishers have generously and wisely made the entire LP available for free streaming. (And thankfully, they have opted to leave out the frustrating fade ins/outs that are typical of many SoundCloud “previews” these days).

If you haven’t heard their classic debut LP Attack Decay Sustain Release LP, and you like to dance, I suggest you get your hands on it and stick it on a quality system when the mood strikes you. (Their second LP, Temporary Pleasure , also offers a handful of gems such as, “Cruel Intentions”).

Back in the late ‘90s, James and Jas were studying folklore and physics respectively at Manchester University, while crafting experimental electronic jams in the spare room of their shared house. Although he eventually dropped out of his program, Jas’s grounding in quantum physics served him later on in music: the drum pattern on SMD’s early white label “Tits & Acid” was based on the matrix mechanics of Werner Heisenberg.

Also, here is the new video for “Pareidolia.”

(“Pareidolia”: a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant).
