Monday Selection | SubAntix Selects

Last week was a hectic one. People to and fro-ing, coming to see, going to visit. A healthy mix of booze, cigarettes and cannabis sativa fueled the blur that was “reading break”. The only thing I remember reading was Low-Life.ca and perhaps various fast food menues as well as the side of the case to make sure we had, in fact, purchased the 7% beers. Not that any of that counts as serious reading.. I suppose that is the beauty of reading week. nevertheless.. I also talked to my good friend Keith Stewart aka SubAntix and he gave me the headsup as to what’s really fresh in his world.

but first, a little sumfing from mine.

Reso

The sonic beats materializing out of Alex Melia’s aural persona are a force to be reckoned with. Reso (UK) has established a gold-plated reputation for himself as one of the most eclectic producers in the realms of dark electronica and his latest mix is certainly no exception. His most recent endeavor, the Valken EP (released through Civil Music , available here ) exerts an atmospheric fervor that works further to compliment his sense of diversity and word on the street has it that a full-length debut is in the pipeline for late-May, early-June of this year.

It’s not a difficult task to conceptualize that this producer’s influences are derived from a wide variety of sources – from jazz to breaks, Boards of Canada to Noisia – and his rearing as a drummer continues to play a major role in each of his exquisite soundscapes. From lush, ambient tones to bass-driven beats, Reso flawlessly manages to lace intricate melodies seamlessly into his work, providing a source of admiration and inspiration for producers and fans alike.

Reso’s latest Big Shot medley commands attention, highlighting every track present in the mix while also maintaining an undeniably natural flow. Ideal for the musically inclined individual, this blend oozes with class, rich in groove and sex appeal. So drill a tiny hole into your head and let Reso’s technoid interpretations seep in with ease.

Saturday Selection

I break bread, ribs, hundred-dollar bills.

So I was a little too late to pick up my tickets for the Coachella festival this year because of my uncertain schedule in April, and I spent a couple hours this morning trying to figure out if I could get my hands on a pass- only to find later, after an exhaustive search, that people are trying to sell them for upwards of $600, more than double the retail price.

To all the scalpers out there- and to all the people who buy concert or festival tickets with the intention of selling them later to genuine music appreciators at a profit: do us all a favor and go get shanked- the world would be better off with you.

And to all my low-lifes out there-

Bless.

Tyler, the Creator | You smell that? That’s the odor of success- bitch.

‘Jesus called he says he’s sick of the disses- I told him to quit bitchin’ this isn’t a fuckin hot line’

Tyler, the Creator is the notoriously snide front-man rapper/producer of the L.A. rap collective, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA).  His undeniably offensive video for Yonkers is unapologetically vicious.  His booming vocal delivery does not sound like it could possibly be emanating from the diaphragm of skinny disgruntled nineteen year old.  Tyler is refreshing because he is raw and he sneers at the commercialism and underwhelming musical products of mainstream rap :

‘green paper, gold teeth, and pregnant gold retrievers- all I want. Fuck money, diamonds, and bitches don’t need em’

He likens his sound to “A Mosh Pit At A Jazz Concert. Or Like, Hitler Fucking Dr. Suess.”

Tyler is evidently haunted by a less-than picture perfect childhood, a deep-seated resentment toward an absent father, and a helpless tendency to see the dark side of human nature everywhere- this is not surprising since he has spent his entire life in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles.  Describing his childhood and the formation of the Odd Future crew in a recent interview on SYFFL, Tyler explains, “I Have No Father, My Mother Was Single Parent TIll i Was 15 When She Bounced Up North Without Me, I Taught Myself Piano At 14 And Started Rapping At 7 Because I Fucking Sucked At Sports… Most Of Us Met In School And Just Skating Around. Selling Drugs And Doing Real Bad Hoodrat Shit.”

Check out this interview on Shut Your Fucking Face and Listen .

Be sure to track down his recent record, BASTARD, which he self-produced in his bedroom.

Nicolas Jaar | Space is Only Noise

“People just going harder and harder, that’s totally going the opposite direction from what I want to bring to this, if I can bring anything. I realized that people will respond to feelings, and not just crazy beats. It’s more about playing with people’s expectations.”

Dusty beats and expressive melodies carelessly meander through this native New Yorker’s first full-length album. Nicolas Jaar , 20-year old student of Brown University, embraces a willingness to breach sub-100-bpm territory in a fantasia of spellbinding, sensual sounds that send you deep inside yourself into a distant yet pleasant trance as the album progresses. In a masterful assimilation of organic tones, Jaar composes a cohesive album designed to be enjoyed from start to finish.

Released just earlier this week, from those at Circus Company , Space is Only Noise has already received notable reviews from the blogosphere and fans alike. Borrowing insight from primary influences such as ambient ancestor’s Brian Eno and Erik Satie, as well as Ethiopean jazz legend, Mulatu Astatke, this prodigy of a producer crafts a seamless nostalgic spectacle of sounds. Get lost in the tracks below and if you are so inclined, purchase the album here .

Fytch | Teens & Talent

Well low-lovelys,

First off all the only real conclusion I’ve made since we last spoke is fuck age! My featured music man, Fytch, will solidify this idea for you as well within these excerpts of an interview he did on January 31st, 2011 with thecoway.wordpress…

My name is Stephane Lo Jacomo, I am from the Netherlands and I am 15 years old . I have been producing Dubstep since I returned from the summer holidays, so approximately five months.”

“The Netherlands, there is basically no link with dubstep. I just happen to go to an international school and it is from there that i have first heard the term Dubstep. I do get the impression however that there is some sort of movement starting to form. Since dubstep is quite recent, i consider myself lucky to have caught the flow in the right time.”

This kid makes me really wonder what I’ve been doing with my life.

Fulgeance | Shit’s All Funky

This guy’ll make you feel like you’re hitting lines in the shadows of the discotheque without sacrificing an utterly modern funk. Taking risks live with an ancient MPC2000, he’s renowned for a mischievous live show. He sites jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver as significant influences, and those saucy sounds shine right through. Cop his most recent Glamoure ep here , and wet your whistle with these refreshing rhythms.

From the Basement | Bassmynt

I was sitting, studying in the Tequila Bookworm on Queen St. in sunny warm Toronto (Bah!). When I looked up to discover a man working tirelessly on his computer on what seemed to be Logic Pro. The music selection at this particular place was better than most, yet this man kept his headphones on, bobbing his head to his own rhythm, in his own world. Another man approached him and struck up a conversation. I overheard them both mention my birthplace and one true love, British Columbia, and immediately I interjected.

“From BC you say?… Fancy that. Me too”

From this point forward we began talking as the other man who originally struck up the conversation receded into his chair dejectedly. It turns out this fellow whom I met some frigid February evening, whilst mucking some chapters, was none other than Bassmynt ; A Shambhala performer and veteran of 5 years.

Full name Jeff-Antoine Cote. Originally from St. Antoine De Tilly, Quebec where he started learning to play the drums at 16. Later, moving to Calgary with his parents he found his first music  fixation in underground hip hop. Since he was playing drums in a few bands, the swap to programming beats onto fruityloops studio software was easy. At the age of 19 he moved to Nelson, BC, attending Selkirk College and majored in Audio Engineering and Composition. “Selkirk was a great college which pushed my drumming and production skills to the next level.” But this ain’t no sales pitch for Selkirk, it was also his opportunity to join the live electronic project called The Man in Havana’s (now known as Kashoo). They played Shambhala Music Festival 3 years in a row until 2009. “I needed a change from Nelson’s mystical fjords so I moved to Toronto to rebuild my name from scratch.”

LL: Yo, what are you runnin’ in terms of Software?

“Everybody seems to use ableton these days, I don’t. I chose to use Logic since it is very similar to Pro Tools, which I was taught with; but Logic doesn’t use digidesign which I hate. The other software in my  gen 1 macbook are a few native instruments vsts like Massive, FM8 (Sonar Jam {below}  was based on a sequence I created on FM8) and Battery and Izotopes’ Ozone,  which is awesome! I also use Effectrix, Rob Pagen’s Albino for angry basslines, and lots of samples.”

LL: Hardware?

“Hardware? I wish! not much here, I run a Lexicon interface, a few mics for random noise and slaps, a Roland Sps sampler, a Plugiator synth, and my drums!!!”

There ya’ have it folks. The inside down-low from one of Toronto’s very own. Be on the lookout for an EP in the near future.

Bassmynt was also kind enough to shell out these tracks for us. A couple of fantastic dark funky jives. Emphasis on impeccable drum sequences and dynamic patterns. You can tell the guy is about his drums. Check dis’ flow..

Sonar Jam – Bassmynt

Change – Bassmynt

Get to Know | FLYING LOTUS

Flying Lotus ‘ 2010 LP Cosmogramma (released on his own blossoming electronica label Brainfeeder ) is the disorienting opus of a mad scientist- unpredictable shuffling low-slung beats, psychedelic west-coast ambient textures, a dash of experimental jazz, nostalgic 8-bit ‘Space Invader’ sounds.  And despite all of these chaotic flavours, he achieves a distinct aesthetic cohesiveness- his own ‘sound’.   Flying Lotus almost feels like a musical evolution of the experimental hip-hop of J Dilla.

Steve Ellison, out of Winnetka California released his first album entitled 1983 on Plug Research Records in 2006.  In 2007, Steve Beckett, the mastermind behind legendary Sheffield based indie label Warp Records signed Flying Lotus and released his 2008 LP Los Angeles.  Ellison since created his own label ‘Brainfeeder’ out of Los Angeles with releases from such artists as the Gaslamp Killer, Teebs, Daedalus, Ras G, Austin Peralta, SAMIYAM, Thundercat, Mr. Oizo, and Tokimonsta.

The week before last, the Brainfeeder crew took over Benji B’s show on BBC Radio 1 out of Ellison’s living room and kitchen in Los Angeles.  The evening featured a phenomenal selection of west-coast beats- and I have posted the session for all of you who missed it, as well as a 30 minute mix by the Gaslamp Killer entitled ‘a decade of Flying Lotus’ to give you a taste of the sounds of Brainfeeder.

As the purported great nephew of Jazz legend John Coltrane, Ellison has a musical lineage that stretches back in time- but upon careful listening, there is no question that his sounds visit us from the future.

Please be sure to pick up a copy of Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma (2010) here .

Helicopter Showdown | THE WRESTLER EP

Helicopter Showdown of San Fransisco California, you are the oil to my sands. You keep my ice cold, and my coffee frothy. You’ve amazingly managed to maintain the integrity of the title The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke wouldn’t even be able to sit still.

This foursome of fear is comprised of Blake Powers, Joshua Small, Devan Day, & Ryan Wade.

A little excerpt from their recent Facebook status does a damn fine job at summarizing what i was going to say next.

“Big tingz to come in 2011, hands being shook , friendships being made, opportunities arising!!! This is gonna be a big year!!”

I feel like this is also a more than relevant statement when talking bout this year to come with things here at low-life.
