From the Basement | Bassmynt
I was sitting, studying in the Tequila Bookworm on Queen St. in sunny warm Toronto (Bah!). When I looked up to discover a man working tirelessly on his computer on what seemed to be Logic Pro. The music selection at this particular place was better than most, yet this man kept his headphones on, bobbing his head to his own rhythm, in his own world. Another man approached him and struck up a conversation. I overheard them both mention my birthplace and one true love, British Columbia, and immediately I interjected.
“From BC you say?… Fancy that. Me too”
From this point forward we began talking as the other man who originally struck up the conversation receded into his chair dejectedly. It turns out this fellow whom I met some frigid February evening, whilst mucking some chapters, was none other than Bassmynt ; A Shambhala performer and veteran of 5 years.
Full name Jeff-Antoine Cote. Originally from St. Antoine De Tilly, Quebec where he started learning to play the drums at 16. Later, moving to Calgary with his parents he found his first music fixation in underground hip hop. Since he was playing drums in a few bands, the swap to programming beats onto fruityloops studio software was easy. At the age of 19 he moved to Nelson, BC, attending Selkirk College and majored in Audio Engineering and Composition. “Selkirk was a great college which pushed my drumming and production skills to the next level.” But this ain’t no sales pitch for Selkirk, it was also his opportunity to join the live electronic project called The Man in Havana’s (now known as Kashoo). They played Shambhala Music Festival 3 years in a row until 2009. “I needed a change from Nelson’s mystical fjords so I moved to Toronto to rebuild my name from scratch.”
LL: Yo, what are you runnin’ in terms of Software?
“Everybody seems to use ableton these days, I don’t. I chose to use Logic since it is very similar to Pro Tools, which I was taught with; but Logic doesn’t use digidesign which I hate. The other software in my gen 1 macbook are a few native instruments vsts like Massive, FM8 (Sonar Jam {below} was based on a sequence I created on FM8) and Battery and Izotopes’ Ozone, which is awesome! I also use Effectrix, Rob Pagen’s Albino for angry basslines, and lots of samples.”
LL: Hardware?
“Hardware? I wish! not much here, I run a Lexicon interface, a few mics for random noise and slaps, a Roland Sps sampler, a Plugiator synth, and my drums!!!”
There ya’ have it folks. The inside down-low from one of Toronto’s very own. Be on the lookout for an EP in the near future.
Bassmynt was also kind enough to shell out these tracks for us. A couple of fantastic dark funky jives. Emphasis on impeccable drum sequences and dynamic patterns. You can tell the guy is about his drums. Check dis’ flow..
