Sound Pollution | Street Noise
I was delighted yesterday afternoon to find my favourite street performer on St. Cats. Being in the deep trance of his ambient and gritty craft prevents the small, but appreciative audience from relinquishing any useful information regarding his work apart from improvised noise for loonies. So i left him some coin and a low-life business card in hopes he’ll give us a shout, and maybe some tips on where to find him playing with more than a battery powered amp. Either way, hats off.

Fresh sounds from Hyperdub- Burial’s new EP ‘Street Halo’
New music from one of the most venerable and tasteful dubstep labels around: Hyperdub- the brainchild of Steve Goodman a.k.a. Kode9. Kode9 is known for his eerie sparse futuristic collaborations with the Space Ape and his excellent catalog of releases that includes Burial, Joker, and Flying Lotus to name a few. (He has also completed his PhD in philosophy and published a book on sonic warfare).
UK future-garage producer genius Burial released his new EP, Street Halo , on the Hyperdub on Monday. Buy the full release directly from Hyperdub-
And here is Kode9′s mix that recently aired on BBC radio 1 [03.12.11] featuring a selection of never before heard upcoming Hyperdub releases. (You can view the tracklist below)

New Music | Fresh Off The Boat
The daily catch is in, trawled off the bottom of a healthy marine biotic system.
It is here. It is upon us. Justice has finally graced us with their iron fist. This bright original mix of the monumental track, different from the take seen in the hype mechanist Adidas advertisement, sounds like a filthy second coming of Queen. Found a 320. Here’s to legality. Album drops 11/4/11.
Civilization (Original Mix) – Justice [electro]
That soccer balled, truck to the temple that accompanied Romain Gavra’s commercial work of genius has yet to be released, but we’ll keep you posted. Check the footage out right about here , if you feel so inclined. For now, this banger will suffice.

Tron: Legacy Reconfigured
“Change the scheme. Alter the mood. Electrify the boys and girls, if you’d be so kind.”
Last year, electronica luminaries Daft Punk enamored us with their symphonic soundtrack for Tron: Legacy. I found myself (and others) appreciating the album much more so in isolation from the film, allowing for some cinematography of the imagination and we have just been blessed with some more material to work with. An assortment of A-list producers – The Crystal Method, Moby, Pretty Lights, Com Truise, M83, etc – have gathered to give the album the official remix treatment, which as expected has already been leaked onto the web. Standouts of the release are available below.
Southern California’s The Glitch Mob are notorious for a certain gluttony towards bass and they secure their reputation in kicking off the medley with their club-friendly refix of the quintessential single of the album, Derezzed.
Derezzed (The Glitch Mob Remix) – Daft Punk
Ken Jordan and Scot Kirkland of The Crystal Method pay homage to one of the (many) epics, The Grid, transforming the original – which Daft Punk cut with an 85-piece orchestra – into a brilliantly ominous dance-floor banger. Really though, one can expect nothing less from the platinum-certified duo whose original studio was constructed in an underground shelter beneath their front lawn, hence their current studio’s name – The Bomb Shelter.
The Grid (The Crystal Method Remix) – Daft Punk
The full LP drops on April 5th.

Burial + Four Tet + Thom Yorke
You will pollute the universe. Yeah, I bet you get this all the time.
Radio rips snatched from Four Tet’s Tuesday night session on Rinse FM dominated the blogosphere within hours of the announcement of his latest collaboration with fellow experimental prodigies Burial and Thom Yorke. Though the partnership is not a first for Kieran Hebden and William Bevan (see below), the recent alliance comes as a pleasant surprise and the result is nothing less than mesmerizing. Ego/Mirrors parades a celestial bond between the trio, who manage to intertwine their distinct aural personas into electronic synthesis while parading each producers unique sound in the process.
The double A-side, under Four Tet’s label Text, will be limited to just 300 vinyl copies, plain black sleeves. You’re gonna have to do some digging to get your hands on one of these bad boys. Grab a digital copy of Ego below. Release date: March 21st.

Simian Mobile Disco in Montreal (03.18.11)
Back in the late ‘90s, James and Jas were studying folklore and physics respectively at Manchester University, while crafting strange electronic music in the spare room of their shared house. Although he eventually dropped out of his course, Jas’s grounding in quantum physics was to come in useful later: the drum pattern on SMD’s early white label Tits & Acid was based on matrix mechanics devised by Werner Heisenberg.
Their first LP is a phenomenal, timeless, dance record- Attack Decay Sustain Release, named partly after the ADSR envelope, a parameter found on any subtractive synthesizer, but also because ADSR stands for Auto Deficient Serotonin Response, a genetic condition from which Jas suffers that makes him unable to experience any real moments of genuine happiness.
Last night, the two synthesis virtuosos breezed through Montreal, and performed a live set with modular synthesizers and of course Low-Life was there to capture the magic of their closing encore ‘I believe’- a tune that dampens panties every time.

A little peek from James Blake’s appearance in Brooklyn last night
Those who have been following James Blake since his early cheeky, but understated and meticulously polished post-dubstep productions, such as those found on his CMYK EP, likely had no doubts that this kid’s sound would rise above the noise. (I’m not going to lie- my heart lies with his early dubstep productions, rather than the more pop influenced singer-song writer approach I hear on his debut LP. Listen to CMYK or Air & the Lack Thereof- fantastic )
This young gangly modest British electronica producer and songwriter crashed onto the mainstream indie music scene with his self-titled debut LP released on A&M this February.
Last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, the teeming crowd listened with their mouths shut and hung on each word. Performing for the first time in the USA, here is James Blake singing “Unluck” in Brooklyn.

I awake this morning to find a lovely booger hiding in my left nostril. I proceed to hack a jolly grey phlegm into my garbage can. Riding this slimy momentum, I skipped the morning bath, for the umpteenth time in a row. Brush my teeth? Not a chance! I can taste the bubbling stench this beautiful day is wrapped in through my grossly depleted cilia, and nothing is going to stop me from wallowing in it like the hog I am. I hope you all have the common courtesy to join me.
Now we must establish some boundaries. A day like today deserves more than the cluttered grime we so often find clogging the sinks of our stainless steal music libraries. No, today requires some class A skank, like sipping motor oil out of an Elizabethan tea cup.

Picture yourself and a friend burning down a pleasant evening spliff by the lake. The frogs are chirping in chorus, until, out of the blue, an alien air craft tears the cloud cover apart. You share a wide and red eyed stare of disbelief with your homie, then avert your attention to the extraterrestrial ship. It wobbles listlessly, to and fro, finding no stable ground to safely situate itself. Innocent frogs that lay in the path of the ship’s laser stabilizers explode instantaneously. Amidst a chorus of popping amphibians, the U.F.O. teeters helplessly, until it’s final plunge into the lake’s dark depths. Slack jawed, you roll another spliff.

Shlohmo
Shlohmo makes me feel like a brain-fried, perverted, degenerate- I mean that in the best way possible. The off-kilter stutter of his beats, the lush ambient soundscapes, the cheeky little clap that sounds a bone snapping- all of these sounds make me cringe and squint and bite my fingers.
I can hear parallels between Shlohmo and an array of stellar producers such as Juj, Flying Lotus, Mount Kimbie, Dimlite to name a few that stick out in my mind. You can hear it in the discombobulated loping swing of his kicks and snares and the artful use of ambient textures.
But Shlohmo has his own signature cheeky mystique as well as instantly recognizable subtle but vulgar bass sounds, which make me scrunch up my face and close my eyes- listen to Tomato Smash; you’ll hear what I’m referring to.

On that note we turn to Wolfey. Offering local support as a fresh DJ to the montreal scene; he is no stranger to the tables. Be sure to check out his latest Bootleg Mix here , if you haven’t already. The last words I exchanged with him were about the acquisition of vinyl tables and the upcoming Skream show. Yea, I could go on about how he’s a lone wolf, raised by wolves.. better to get it out of the way.. but the fact of the matter is, it’s his fucking name and he will be bringing the numbers that will not stop until long after the morning light. That’s us. Yours truly, the low-life crew.
