a lighter head for your heavy heart

Beach Comas | Driftwood

[album cover by Taylore-Anne Scarabelli ]

On their debut release Driftwood , Beach Comas deliver organic rhythms, (swaggering sax solos), and layers of analog synths drenched in reverb and atmosphere.  The artists’ respective upbringings in Vancouver, B.C. are reflected in this record’s natural west coast flavour.  The songs range in feels: several incorporate half-step rhythm and bass from dubstep; others such as Through are more experimental; while Exit is bittersweet atmospheric ambient.  Suffice to say, Beach Comas keep the record surprising and refreshing by offering a range of moods and rhythms from ravey drumstep to late-night listening beats.

Don’t Come Again features vocals by Claire Mortifee- (easily one of the most talented and ear/eye-catching young singers and songwriters in Vancouver).  The chorus is likely to hang around in your head-space for a while.

Beach Comas are Tomi Jay (T.J.) & Dan Garrod.  I had the chance to sit down for a smoke with Dan last week: he told me that they made Enter , the opening track, while driving the final stretch of a road trip into Los Angeles in the dust of their pilgrimage to Coachella 2011- West Coast indeed.  They have generously made their release available at no charge on Bandcamp here .  And also check out the video for Don’t Come Again here .

We look forward to hearing more in the future-
