Low-Life managed to catch up with Dirtyphonics at their Vancouver show last week. We were given a few minutes to get the rundown of what’s new and exciting in their collective careers. With a French charm that only a mother could love; these guys are the best of buds and seem to be living the dream by playing music all over the world with their closest friends. With a sense of humour to boot they work off each other backstage as deftly as they do onstage. It seems KO caught them at the perfect time and their effervescent mood is an indication of this.

As the story goes they were already making music before they met. Some of them were playing in metal bands or producing hip-hop, electro, movie scores etc. Capskod and Playte, who were in the same art school, met Pho in 2004 and Dirtyphonics was born. A few years later, Pitch In and Youthstar [live emcee] joined the crew.

LL: Give us an idea of the producers as well as other musical influences who inspire each of you the most.

DP: “Metallica, Noisia, Subfocus, Daft Punk, Metallica, Johnny Cash, Method Man, Wu Tang. The thing is, we all come from different backgrounds. It’s not solely hip-hop, metal, or electro. It’s a mix of all of those. We like to mix all of that in our music.”

DP: “ We can interact onstage, and there is never a dull moment. We act as a band for the live show; we rely on each other, like a rock band but with our instruments. We have a style that stems out of being in a group. These guys are your best friends your brothers, your family, your colleagues so sometimes you love them, sometimes you hate them. We know each other inside out, sometimes a little too much.”

LL: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

DP: “ A shot of vodka, a big fucking hug. You know, just getting in the vibe to rock the shit out of the party. Its simple really, we have one hour and a half to get to maximum energy. Whether it’s in the plane or the hotel we try and conserve all our energy for that hour because for the remainder of the night there is no rest. Go.”

LL: What are some of your favorite venues or events that you guys have played?

DP: “It ranges from crazy huge festivals with 10,000 people to small clubs with 200 people.”
