I heard this cut for the first time on the Benji B show a few weeks back – within a few phrases, CAS had me hooked.
London/Essex-based mc CAS rattles off insightful cheeky simultaneously self-deprecating and self-glorifying rhymes over top a bed of warm synths. For me, the vibe of the production is reminiscent of Air’s classic Moon Safari LP and the soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides .
Of the songs I have stumbled upon so far this year, it’s safe to say that this is one of the shiniest gems… If you haven’t heard it yet, “Walkin’” comes
recommended

Given that BBC Radio 1 named him the “Sound Of 2013″, it is a bit surprising that we haven’t heard more from Brolin this year so far. That said, as of yet, every tune I have come across that has his name on it has been worth listening to and coming back to.

Out now on I/AM/ME , this is the third track from Maya Jane Coles ‘s debut full-length entitled Comfort .
“Burning Bright” is deep and melodic. Foxman’s catchy girlish pop vocals complement Coles’s understated ‘rainy-day’ synths.

Two of Vancouver’s most talented hip-hop producers and beat-makers, Nate Drobner and Nick Wisdom , a.k.a. Potatohead People, have put their spin on Outkast’s anthemic pop classic “Ms. Jackson” and it sounds delightful. The pair layers Big Boi and Andre 3000 over top a cheeky impetuous boom-bap groove that will leave you in need of a neck-brace. They also weave in some vocals from Kendrick Lamar’s “Sing About Me, I’m Dyin’ of Thirst”–one of my favourite cuts off his acclaimed Good Kid, M.A.D.D. City LP.
The pair will be sorely missed by the denizens of Vancouver’s electronic and hip-hop enthusiast community. Nate recently re-located to Montreal and Nick has plans to join him before the summer is out.

Here is 8prn ‘s take on Outkast’s anthemic pop classic “Roses”. This may be the dopest remix we have heard from Patrick Holland so far…
That said–he has a handful choice cuts in his remix discography already. ( His adaptation of Evy Jane’s “nothing so great” is a personal favourite.)
If you are feeling 8prn ‘s steez, put on his ‘escape’ mix; it’s fresh out of the oven:
You can catch him tomorrow night in Vancouver at Fortune. He will be warming up the crowd for Kaytranada and Kastle . Here are the details …

Blanc 1 ‘s ” It’s All Over ” is the first in a series of white labels released by John Talabot ‘s Barcelona lable, Hivern . Limited to 100 copies, the announcement was made prior to a highly anticipated set at the London club, Fabric .
Due to audial similarities, and a mysterious lack of information on the artist, we speculate that Blanc 1 could, in fact, be an alias of label-head, John Talabot ‘s. Decide for yourself.

Words inevitably fall short of conveying the experience of music. So our recommendation to you is to skip this introduction, and press play. If you’re feeling curious, then read on…
Vancouver native Tom Speakman, a.k.a. Boha , has been refining his talents as a musician since he picked up his uncle’s guitar at age 13. During his teenage years, Speakman and a handful of like-minded enthusiasts came together and formed a series of bands in order to showcase their original songs. Of course, being 17 at the time, it was rather difficult to find a venue that would welcome the slew of rowdy youths. And so, Speakman and his friends became accustomed to (and relished in) playing in seedy basements and underground parking garages filled with sound, sweat, and bodies. However, in 2009, he experienced a shift in inspiration.
While visiting Rio de Janeiro, Speakman was introduced to Baile Funk, a musical, social, and political phenomenon that has been alive since the 1970s. Baile Funk was popularized in lower-class neighborhoods of Brazil by individuals who chose to create their own genre of music centered around social injustice and breaking social taboos. (Baile Funk has been criticized for it’s overt, sexually explicit content.) As Fact aptly puts it, production generally consists of an “everything-in-the-blender ethos” wherein a meld of Miami bass and an assortment of electronic devices are fused with Brazillian singing, rapping and drumming. While in Rio, Speakman stumbled across Baile parties and it was these experiences that sparked his fascination with electronic instruments. All of this considered, although we are not ourselves connaisseurs of Baile Funk and so we don’t really know what we are talking about in this respect, we suggest that the influence of this particular style of music may not be obvious on Boil .
For us, the emotional climax of this record is “Soft Square”. Over top a bed of soft kicks and wind-chimes, Speakman layers a melancholic brass section as well as a crisp electric guitar melody and a nostalgic synth melody that do a bittersweet little dance together [1:00]. The trajectory of the arrangement takes us into some weirder territory as the sweet slide guitar melodies give way to strange oozing detuned synth chords [2:14], (which we are told were constructed with a Realistic Concertmate MG-1–a cheap lovechild of Radioshack and Moog Music born in 1981). Speakman’s cold robotic rhythms and his sample selection with respect to percussion sounds bring the productions of Thom Yorke and Radiohead to mind.
“A Call” takes us into more of an ambient experimental locale. It layers field recordings of unsettling clanging metal and feverish dark rustling sounds, and detuned bells. The only hint of human emotion comes from the soft mournful synth chord progression that comes in for the first time around [1:12].
Brought to you by Jellyfish Recordings , Boil is Speakman’s first release and it deserves your attention.

Coma generally gravitate towards producing minimal yet melodic, pop-imbued electronica, a tendency that sets the German-based duo apart from their cohorts at Kompakt Records (their “homebase label”). Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad are meticulous in their work, something that is quite evident in the fact that their forthcoming LP, In Technicolor , has been in the works for three years now. The lead single “ Hoooooray ” debuted just over a month ago and provided something like an explanation for the hints that Coma have offered about their latest work-
“Where our previous releases were kinda mirroring a foggy black and white movie, this is definitely a color film… our attempt at fusing diverse sounds in a more vivid manner, without falling prey to boring club conventions restricting the expressiveness of the music.”
First heard on Michael Mayer ’s RA podcast, “My Orbit” won’t be featured on the album- however, the brilliant single does offer another taste of the lighter, more disco-oriented sounds that Coma have been recently experimenting with. “My Orbit” will be released tomorrow via Kompakt and will feature remixes from Clouds and Dauwd .

[Lulu James]
Following up his break-out single “ Reykjavik ,” which showcases his silky smooth falsetto, his understated approach to production, and his keen pop songwriting sensibilities, UK-based electronic pop producer Brolin recently shared this remix of Lulu James’ soulful future-classic “Closer”. When a song is an undeniable gem, the standard of excellence is set pretty high for the producer who attempts to remix it. I must admit that Brolin’s adaptation doesn’t make me melt in the way that the original version does; nevertheless, it is definitely worth listening to. Also, if I’m not mistaken, Brolin integrates some of his own vocals in support of Ms. James, which brings a novel dynamic to the track.

Released on February 19th via Warp Records , Jamie Lidell is Lidell ‘s fourth record following his 2005 return to solo work with Multiply, Jim (2008), and Compass (2010). Jamie Lidell was committed to tape and mixed at Lidell ’s newly built studio in his new home in Nashville, the latest stop on a restless migratory pattern that has seen him move from his birthplace in the heart of England, through the musical hotbeds of Berlin and New York. On this latest project, Lidell blends equal parts soul and funk with experimental electronic and dance influences.
Lidell will be touring Europe and North America over March and April. Check out the tour schedule here .
I have not carefully listened through the record in its entirety, and I don’t have time to give it the review it deserves, but after a quick preview of each of the tracks, “Blaming Something” and “What A Shame” are two of the stand-out cuts for me.
Track Listing 1. I’m Selfish 2. Big Love 3. What A Shame 4. Do Yourself a Faver 5. You Naked 6. why_ya_why 7. Blaming Something 8. You Know My Name 9. So Cold 10. Don’t You Love Me 11. In Your Mind

[Jessie Ware]
Earlier this morning, English pop-soul artist, Jessie Ware , unofficially released the single, Sweet Talk, by making the track available to stream on her own Youtube channel. Sweet Talk features production from Bristolian bass-music behemoth, Julio Bashmore , and by Dave Okumu , the lead singer and guitarist of the British band, The Invisible .
Jessie Ware’s Sweet Talk is a dreamy and seductive combination between tasteful electronic-yet-organic production, and Jessie’s gentle depiction of submitting to emotion opposed to logic. The result is beautiful, achieving near perfect chemistry of atmosphere and sentiment.
Sweet Talk is taken from the Jessie’s debut album, Devotion, available to pre-order, here .

Its not every day that we feature a female brit-pop act, but then again Jessie Ware isn’t you’re everyday female brit-pop act, seeing as she snagged the under-ground renowned Julio Bashmore to sit behind the mixer for her latest track, “110%,” due out on June 4th via PMR .
While you’re at it, have a listen to this particularly scintillating remix from UK duo Disclosure , put out in February of this year. I highly recommend it.
