Ryat | Howl

During the Vancouver Brainfeeder Showcase last week, alongside Brainfeeder acts Samiyam , Mono/Poly and MAST (her best friend and “undiscovered genius” who toured and collaborated with her a couple years back), RYAT premiered the sounds we can expect to hear on her forthcoming LP, Totem ( Brainfeeder ) .

Since the release of her last record, Avant Gold , Christina McGeehan has stepped away from instrumentals, focusing more so on electronic experimentation. In regards to her upcoming release, she says-

“Totem is much more compositional and less poppy. It’s more conceptual and I look at it like a classical record in its themes. I wrote almost the entire music before any words were written at all. It was more about vibe and energy and sound. I later meditated on the compositions and each song’s meaning and lyrics slowly appeared in poem form. [Totem] has a completely different artistic process and conception.”

Her music has often been said to vocally and sonically resemble Bjork ‘s, and Christina is flattered. But one Soundcloud viewer put it quite well: “This reminds me of Bjork minus all  of the annoying aspects.” Download the first single from Totem (out June 4th) below.

Lorn | My Device

Marcus Ortega conjures up a chilling nostalgic atmosphere through the interplay of a washed out discordant piano, and the deep strolling plucks of a double-bass.

With a couple EPs, and the Nothing Else LP [ Brainfeeder , 2010] under his belt, Lorn has shown himself to be extremely sonically versatile.

Look out for his upcoming release entitled Ask The Dust on Ninja Tune , which drops on the 18th of June 2012. Ortega describes his new work as “haunted, oily, and smeared.”

Yours,

Wolfey

Mario | Let Me Love You (Lapalux Bootleg Remix)

[Lapalux]

Stuart Howard, riding high from his recent release on Brainfeeder , has reworked one of the most successful R&B singles of the past decade into a nearly unrecognizable beat number. Lapalux deconstructs the glossy original, synthesizing its parts into a frantic, densely layered amalgamation of manipulated vocal cuts and supplemental synth and percussion lines. Somehow, through texturing, bending and warping his noises, Howard manages to craft a swinging, soul-inflected tune from almost completely synthetic sound.

Analogue Monsta | Time To

For her latest project, the queen of the LA beat scene, TOKiMONSTA , has teamed up with Suzi Analogue . This is the second track to be released as a preview to their upcoming EP; expected this Spring.

Together, these two develop a most “LSDelicious” beat.

Strangeloop & Austin Peralta | Bavkness (ft. Van Detta)

Just over a week ago an iconic collaboration surfaced between two experimental wunderkinds. This track was made possible by Austin Peralta , spawn of the almighty Z-Boy , Stacy Peralta, consorting with homie and fellow Brainfeeder heavy-weight and VJ extraordinaire, Strangeloop (David Wexler). A euphonious yet necessarily smutty anthem that a west-coast summer’s success hinges on. This is the first track of Van Detta’s (Vanessa Fernandez) that has made it’s way into the low-life library, but we are blown away with this Singaporean surprise, thus will be keeping a close eye on her and her glorious throat.

Mono/Poly | Needs Deodorant

Mono/Poly is a beat-maker from Bakersfield, California. He enjoys a healthy balance between astral projection and the manufacturing of his own glitch-funk-hop style. A mysterious figure in the mix of an anti-genre scene of producers in LA, Charles Dickerson has a knack for waxy layered vibrations.

Here is a taste of Manifestations , the EP that was his debut release on Brainfeeder in early 2011.
“A well-paced work, the EP’s momentum grows and then contorts into other dimensions, balancing powerful rhythms and a beautiful depth for a holistically moving experience”.
