“Got you on my mind–like an addict”

Praise George Fitzgerald and his label ManMakeMusic for its policy of sharing full-length versions of their new releases on SoundCloud.
This is the second offering from Laszlo Dancehall ( Leon Vynehall + Christian Piers ) on MMM –three driving lo-fi tech house belters, each with its own distinctive flavour–joined by the common threads of a 4/4 groove and the hiss of tape saturation.
“Whip That” is light-hearted funky Chicago/Detroit-inspired crunchy UK-house.
“Flute Works” is dark, hypnotizing and percussion-driven.
“Fatty Que” is an exuberant dynamic interplay between an indecipherable mangled pitched-down vocal snippet and a soft warm bed of analog chords over top of a relentless 909 loop.
If you’re feeling those cuts, here is a link to their first EP released back in May.
Out soon via Double Six , both in mp3 as well as in 12″ format, here is Paul Woolford ‘s re-interpretation of George Fitzgerald ‘s anthemic house single “I Can Tell” .
Woolford strips away most of the vocal, the chords, and melody, and instead morphs rhythmic piano riffs over top of the rhythm section in order to develop the arrangement. Make sure to hang on until around 3:07 to experience the main turning point in the track.

Since George FitzGerald ’s “I Can Tell (By the Way You Move)” debuted during the Hotflush x Boiler Room Takeover with FitzGerald and Scuba , a few different rips have been floating around the interwebs. Now, following his signing to Domino Records , the UK house kingpin has shared a longer (though still not full) version of the single.

Created by industry maven Gilles Peterson , Brownswood Recordings was initially a platform for unsigned artists, who were attempting to air their work on Gilles’ late night BBC Radio 1 show, to release their music; today, Brownswood represents an eclectic collection of producers.
For the label’s 100th release, Brownswood has decided to amass a retrospective of the group’s favourite reworks from 2006-2013. The compilation includes work from SBTRKT , Joy Orbison , Machinedrum , and George Fitzgerald - amongst others. It should be noted -despite the fact that this compilation is a retrospective- Mala & Simbad’s rework of Mala’s “Noches Suenos” is brand new.
01. José James – BLACKMAGIC (Joy Orbison’s Recreation)
02. Gang Colours – To Repel Ghosts (George Fitzgerald Remix)
03. Ghostpoet – Survive It (Quest Guidance Remix)
04. Ben Westbeech – So Good Today (Yoruba Soul Remix)
05. Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Band – Rezando (Michel Cleis Remix)
06. Owiny Sigoma Band – Doyoi Nyajo Nam (Quantic Remix)
07. José James – WARRIOR (SBTRKT Remix)
08. Mala – Noches Sueños (Mala & Simbad Super Dub Mix)
09. Gang Colours – Fancy Restaurant (Machinedrum Remix)
10. Zara McFarlane – Until Tomorrow (Ogris Debris Remix)
11. José James – Desire (Moodymann Remix)
12. Owiny Sigoma Band – Wires (Theo Parrish Remix)
My definitive favorite of the compilation (for the time being) is Moodymann’s rework of José James ‘ “Desire” ; but I assure you that every selection in the retrospective is of top quality. Some selections may even invoke a feeling of nostalgia.
The digital release is available now via Itunes , Bleep , Juno , and Boomkat .

[Leon Vynehall]
Brighton-based beat-maker Leon Vynehall chooses to hold on to his true identity. The DJ/producer has made some noise in the UK house scene as of late, and it easy to understand why as he effortlessly blends soul, funk, and disco music with the four on the floor sound we know and love. His latest cut, “Sister”, is being represented by the folks at AUS Music , the label that has been putting forth work from other UK house producers such as George Fitzgerald and Bicep .On Fitzgeralds label, ManMakeMusic , Leon released today a collaboration with Christian piers under the alias “ Lazlo Dancehall “; check out that release here . The “Brother/Sister” EP will be out officially on June 10th, and you can pre-order the vinyl now via Boomkat .
If you dig “Sister”, check out Leon’s podcast for XLR8R, here ; I recommend it.

Why is this mix series titled “The Bootleg Tapes”? I have been pondering this question… Wikipedia describes a “bootleg recording” as “an audio or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist or under other legal authority.” The article goes on to explain that “the process of making and distributing such recordings is known as bootlegging.” To be honest, I did not pay for any of these tracks, and some of them have not yet been released by their respective labels. I did not receive permission from the “copyright holders” to re-distribute this content, (as SoundCloud’s copyright infringement detection software pointed out to me when I tried unsuccessfully to upload the mix the first couple times.) In short, these mixes are conceived and distributed in contravention of music copyright law. For this reason, it would seem that the title of the series is fitting.
For this tenth episode, I put together a special two-hour mix comprised of an eclectic selection of house, techno, UK garage, and soul. Most of the tracks are contemporary, but you will hear a handful of classics from the likes of Fingers Inc., Rhythim Is Rhythim, Inner City, and Carl Craig.
Special thanks to the other Low-Life staff-writers who helped me find a great deal of this music–as well as to our followers.

Jessie Ware released a handful of remixes of her single “No To Love” yesterday from Todd Edwards, Ewan Pearson, and George Fitzgerald.
On my personal favorite of the three adaptations, George Fitzgerald integrates Ware’s sultry vocals into an infectious minimalist house framework.
