Blood Diamonds | Phone Sex (ft. Grimes)

“I describe my music as a mix of juices– Tropicana orange juice and a little bit of off-brand pineapple juice. I guess you could call it generic-brand pineapple-wave.”

This tropical, sun-kissed jam is courtesy of Blood Diamonds - born Michael Tucker, a past resident of Vancouver, which was the city where him and Grimes first connected.

The pop, pool party anthem has been unveiled in anticipation for the 12″ that Mike will be putting out later this summer. “Phone Sex” will be released on transparent pink vinyl on July 24th via 4AD , accompanied by remixes from Unicorn Kid and Jensen Sportag .

d’Eon | Al-Qiyamah

The work of experimental Montreal-based composer, d’Eon dates back to the early 90s, which perhaps exacerbates the (unsought) parallels that are often drawn between his voice and Phil Collins’. In regards to this “problem,” he once commented, “It’s really funny, I actually had no idea that my voice sounded like Phil Collins when I started out … and then there were a couple of reviews when the new record came out that sort of trashed it for sounding too much like Phil Collins. And I thought ‘Oh man like, damn. I didn’t realize this was an issue.’ I don’t try to sound like Phil Collins. I don’t want to sound like Phil Collins. I like Phil Collins…”

The last we heard from d’Eon was Darkbloom , the split 12” that he released with Grimes . However, since then, the producer
has been hard at work molding his next release aptly titled LP , out June 5 th on Hippos In Tanks .

“Al-Qiyamah,” the first taste of LP , is the closing track of the record, clocking in at nine minutes. In regards to the preferable mindset one should be in when listening to his music, he’s said-

“I mean it doesn’t always come out, but I’ve felt like a lot of my music has sort of an apocalyptic feel. A lot of the new stuff has a lot of double-time kick drums and bass drums. So if you feel like the world is about it end you could probably appreciate it. I really value feelings of dread and anxiety in music. As for a mind state, I’d say it’d be helpful to smoke weed, but it’s not required.”

Cadence Weapon | Conditioning / Grimes Remix

“My dad said I was an afterparty baby. This goes out to all the accidents out there- keep on making mistakes.”

Rollie Pemberton’s roots in the Canadian hip hop scene run deep. His papa was a pioneering hip hop DJ on CJSR-FM and by the age of 20 Pemberton had already dropped out of post-secondary, committing the majority of his waking hours to music. Inspired by dance sounds (specifically Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, etc.) and the eclectic tunes his father introduced him to around the house, Pemberton adopted the moniker Cadence Weapon and has since released two full-length albums. Oh, and while fiendishly continuing to push the boundaries of rap and electronic music, he was also sworn in as Edmonton’s poet laureate in 2009.

Weapon’s latest piece, “Conditioning,” is the lead single off his forthcoming record, Hope in Dirt City, which will see a release on May 29th. Soon after the tunes unveiling, Montreal-based electronicista Grimes offered her own interpretation on the track- a digital spin of the original, wherein she predictably injects those signature whimsical vocals.

Membrain (Grimes & Cop Car Bonfire) | Airic

[scan by Peter Max]

Earlier this year, Grimes caught the set of Montreal’s most loveable noise polluter; Tim Lafontaine, known to the francophone streets as Cop Car Bonfire . She was so taken aback by his improvised industrial busking, along with the occasional flip of his tad-too-shiny mane as he was hunched over his nob and toggled collection of boxes and peddles, that she approached him with the prospect of forming what could very well become Canada’s premier noise-pop duo. Mere weeks later, the pair has a product. ‘Airic’ is the stand-out jam off of their debut EP, “ Sit Back, Rewind .”
