George FitzGerald

Since George FitzGerald’s “I Can Tell (By the Way You Move)” debuted during the Hotflush x Boiler Room Takeover with FitzGerald and Scuba, a few different rips have been floating around the interwebs. Now, following his signing to Domino Records, the UK house kingpin has shared a longer (though still not full) version of the single.

[Paul Woolford]

UK-based dance music producer Paul Woolford has absolutely floored the international dance music community with his latest effort, titled frankly, “Untitled”; out on Hotflush Recordings as of July 8th, 2013. The single has gained praise from world renowned producers and DJs such as: Skream, Joy Orbison, Bicep, Jackmaster, Ben UFO and Dusky - amongst others. Untitled’s high regard clicks as Woolford seamlessly intertwines a fantastic piano chord progression, an industrial-yet-lively bass-line, and a haunting, echoing vocal sample.

It is also interesting to note that the cover artwork was done by the late abstract-expressionist painter, Mark Rothko.

Below is a 2-minute preview of the full product. I suggest you buy the track here, as it comes highly recommended.

Four Tet | For These Times / Suit and Tie Remix /2013/03/11/four-tet-for-these-times-suit-and-tie-remix/ /2013/03/11/four-tet-for-these-times-suit-and-tie-remix/#comments Mon, 11 Mar 2013 20:38:43 +0000 /?p=14028 Read More]]> Four Tet

In the past few hours, Kieran Hebden has spontaneously shared two new tracks. The first, “For These Times,” feels slightly reminiscent of his 2010 LP There Is Love In You with its ghostly emotive vocals paired alongside a dance-inspired beat. The other, a rework of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie,” reflects Four Tet’s more recent experimentation with tracks composed almost entirely of percussive intricacies. Timberlake’s chopped up vocals provide the only melody for the song, resting atop a twitchy, hi-hat groove.

“For These Times” appears on the Nonplus compilation, Think and Change- a “cognitive dancefloor therapy session.” The collection also features cuts from the likes of Martyn, Pearson Sound, and Scuba.

The Bootleg Tapes | Vol. X /2013/03/07/the-bootleg-tapes-vol-x/ /2013/03/07/the-bootleg-tapes-vol-x/#comments Thu, 07 Mar 2013 22:53:42 +0000 /?p=13921 Read More]]> Bootleg Tapes | Vol. X (art)

Why is this mix series titled “The Bootleg Tapes”?  I have been pondering this question… Wikipedia describes a “bootleg recording” as “an audio or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist or under other legal authority.” The article goes on to explain that “the process of making and distributing such recordings is known as bootlegging.” To be honest, I did not pay for any of these tracks, and some of them have not yet been released by their respective labels. I did not receive permission from the “copyright holders” to re-distribute this content, (as SoundCloud’s copyright infringement detection software pointed out to me when I tried unsuccessfully to upload the mix the first couple times.) In short, these mixes are conceived and distributed in contravention of music copyright law. For this reason, it would seem that the title of the series is fitting.

For this tenth episode, I put together a special two-hour mix comprised of an eclectic selection of house, techno, UK garage, and soul. Most of the tracks are contemporary, but you will hear a handful of classics from the likes of Fingers Inc., Rhythim Is Rhythim, Inner City, and Carl Craig.

Special thanks to the other Low-Life staff-writers who helped me find a great deal of this music–as well as to our followers.
