Shlohmo ‘s remix of Samo Sound Boy ‘s “Your Love” is an expansive slow-burning soulful arp jam that will melt you.
It’s out now on Body High .
Moments after Shlohmo announced that he would soon be heading out on a US tour with XXYYXX , Henry Laufer treated us to his sought-after remix of rising LA outfit Electric Guest ’s “The Bait.” Complete with those cheeky, characteristic percussive rimshots, “The Bait” moves slowly alongside brooding pitched-down vocals and deep, reverberating bass.
See if the two producers are stopping by your city here .

Everybody wants me to say something about my private life, as much of it as is left. Here goes-
Through various forms of social media, Shlohmo , D33J and the rest of the family at Wedidit have announced their next release- a split EP between two producers who respectively go by C.Z. and Arnold. Led by a spirited yet mournful piano line and chopped up vocal samples that flutter above a handful of enigmatic elements, the colourful track doesn’t stray far from the distinctive brand of sound that the collective has cultivated.
The split EP will be available this coming Tuesday.

Vancouver-based producer Patrick Holland has been busy in recent weeks. While not in the studio or at school, he has been warming up local crowds for the likes of Shlohmo , Groundislava , and Ryan Hemsworth and others as well as playing casual sets at the Chapel Sound nights .
In late March, he released his second EP titled Over It via our very own web-based label Blenheim & Celtic . Although Over It did not receive an avalanche of press, the record met with enthusiastic approval from a handful of authoritative music tastemakers including Andrew Ryce, a music journalist who writes for both Pitchfork and Resident Advisor . One morning a week-or-so following the release, while listening to Hemsworth get into the swing of his set for Diplo & Friends broadcast via BBCR1 , Holland was pleasantly surprised to hear the opening bars of “Runnin’”, one of the cuts from his recent EP, blend into the mix. Around the same time period, he was approached by WCR Management–the manager behind Kaytranada , a young Montreal-based hip-hop producer who has been making waves in recent months. (Check out our recent interview with Kaytranada here.)
In the past week, Holland added two new sounds to his catalog of bootlegs, which is growing healthily.
Last week he released his hypnotic energetic four-to-the-floor adaptation of “Forgive,” a track off Burial ‘s debut self-titled instant-classic.
Today, he dropped his slinky mangled interpretation of Beyoncé ‘s epic pop anthem “Crazy In Love”.

Just up is Shlohmo ‘s latest. While comments that I can relate to on his facebook page may question the direction of his more recent music, asking things like ‘what happened to this guy?’ [with a link to ' Empty Pools ' off his 2011 Places EP ], Shlohmo does and always has enjoyed chopped and screwed, R&B, and old southern shit. While many of us may have initially fallen for the fragile musicality of his earlier material, he is doing his thing (well); so maybe you should take the advice of commenter #2 and stop being a “deaf annoying clueless hipster”.
One way or another, here it is. Enjoy-

Following up his debut EP Time Waste ( Jellyfish Recordings , 2012), young Vancouver-based electronic music producer and Chapel Sound crew-member, Patrick Holland, a.k.a. 8prn , has crafted this smoky soulful brooding beat-tape entitled Over It for our very own Blenheim & Celtic Recordings . The record is cheeky, dark, and intoxicating, but also souful and sincere.
On this project, Holland draws heavily on hip-hop and R&B for the rhythmic framework, which was constructed using a Roland SP-404 and Ableton Live . Holland’s chopped re-pitched vocal snippets, skittering swung hats, and weighty morphing analog bass synth tones (courtesy of his Dave Smith Instruments Mopho ) on “Runnin’” and “Over It” are reminiscent in some ways of the work of Henry Laufer a.k.a Shlohmo .
“ Late 2012, with the whole new age trap thing going on, I kinda wanted to dabble in it a bit, so I went for a heavier sound, 130-140 tempo and all that. Artists like Bames , Falcons , Lunice , and Sango were references for that feel. The distorted analog bass/synth sound comes from my love for garage punk stuff like Ty Segall and Dead Meadow. I also got into some old Triple 6–pre Three-Six Mafia, like Koopsta Knicca, DJ Paul, and Juicy J… So, that old southern triplet hi-hat and deep sub rubbed off on me. ”
“ Like any music, there are things I’ve heard, while out and about, that I like but that I find way too cheesy and over used… certain vocal processing and pitching, drum machine samples and song structures. I feel like I’ve taken the things that I don’t like, and morphed them into a sound that I enjoy… not quite a mockery or parody of shitty club music, but definitely a cheeky rip into it. ”
“ I made ‘runnin’ a week before opening for UZ , in December, so that I could have a track of my own that could be considered a ‘club track’, haha. So when I started making ‘over it’, I was going for the same feel… Then I realized that I didn’t want to make ‘certified club tracks’… so I added the guitar, vocals, odd percussion, and a chill bassline to wash out the trappyness of the piece …”
[Patrick Holland a.k.a. 8prn]
The Over It EP was put together in a small bedroom studio in a basement suite on the east side of Vancouver.

“January 24, 2013, Jeremih and Shlohmo met at Cosmic Zoo Studios to write and record their first official collaboration – a new song, from scratch.”
San Francisco-based collective Yours Truly openly admits that the latest episode of their original series, “Songs From Scratch,” wasn’t their idea. Since back in October, when Shlohmo remixed Jeremih ’s “Fuck U All the Time,” the pair have displayed a mutual admiration for one another and it really was only a matter of time before they came together to craft a song from the ground up.
“Bo Peep (Do U Right)” essentially came together in one night. We first caught a preview of the track a couple weeks back when Yours Truly released a short video of the duo collaborating in Daddy Kev ‘s smoke-filled studio and the result, as promised, is now available for download.
Shlohmo and Jeremih are set to play a show together in LA on April 6 th - if you’re going to be in the neighborhood, the details are available here .

Following up heheh. (2009, WEDIDIT) and Slack (2010, WEDIDIT), Juj , an L.A.-based beatsmith and member of Shlohmo’s WEDIDIT Collective, is poised to release his latest LP offering entitled Walnut via HUH WHAT & WHERE on February 9th. In anticipation, he has shared a cut from the release–”Waves”–as well as a music video for another cut–”Micro”.
With each successive release, Juj has continued to refine his cheeky endearing take on psychedelic jazz-influenced instrumental hip-hop–artfully blending warm crackling textures, sampled instruments, vocal snippets, and disjointed rhythms.
I’m very much looking forward to listening through Walnut upon it’s release next Friday.

[Henry Laufer a.k.a. Shlohmo]
Need not an introduction nor preamble, Henry Laufer has finally shared with his followers what he’s been working on amidst his recent lull in activity.
The Laid Out EP will be released on March 5th via Friends of Friends and Wedidit –a limited edition vinyl comes out on April 2nd. The EP will showcase six tracks–one of which featuring Brooklyn artist How To Dress Well . Another, titled, “Later,” is available to stream at this very moment.
“Later” possesses Laufer’s signature sound: soulful and distorted layers, tremendous synth crescendos, and metallic high-hat-snare complexities.
To add to the excitement, Laufer has released information on his upcoming North American tour. Said information and more can be found at freshly published, shlohmo.com

San Francisco’s D33J , yet another member of the Wedidit Collective, released this tune this afternoon. As one might expect, the edit of Taylor Swift ‘s hit single maintains the same oozy and hi-hat riddled tendencies so championed by his label cohorts; Shlohmo , Groundislava , and alike.

We first heard it during his Boiler Room set back in August and it’s just now that Groundislava has unchained his bootleg of Shlohmo ’s “Ghosts pt. 2.” The original appeared on Henry Laufer’s first “official” release, Shlo-Fi , back in 2009, and what a release it was. GIL alters the tune’s ethereally ambient tone and injects a pulse, giving the track a bit more of an upbeat dance-floor feel.

If you’ve been keeping up with us here at LOW-LIFE, you’re probably already aware that we have been festival hopping, cross-continentally, over the course of the summer. So far, we have collectively managed to hit MUTEK (Montreal, Quebec), Sonar (Barcelona, Spain), 10 Days Off (Ghent, Belgium), Tomorrowland (Boom, Belgium), Shambhala (Nelson, British Columbia) and Outlook (Fort Punta Christo, Croatia). Next on the docket, we have Vancouver’s very own New Forms Festival , a cultural hub dedicated to exploring art, media, and electronic music.
“[New Forms Festival is] a survey of the electronic scene that rivals Montreal’s internationally acclaimed MUTEK.”

Now, if you have ever had the pleasure of attending the now Montreal-based festival, you would recognize that the Georgia Straight scribe has made a mighty bold statement. However, having attended both (LOW-LIFE paid a visit to New Forms ’11 last September), we couldn’t agree more.
[Teen Daze, New Forms 2011]
This year is New Forms’ 12th instalment and, arguably, the detail-oriented organizers may have very well fashioned the most striking line-up yet. This year, some of the most admirable forward-thinking artists, such as Teebs , Actress , Kode9 , Sinjin Hawke , and Canblaster , will take to the decks. Furthermore, like MUTEK , New Forms places an emphasis on young and local talent, recognizing the importance of providing a “platform for artistic growth.” So, spectators will also have the pleasure of catching the Vancouver-based Jellyfish Recordings crew – Headspace , Nick Wisdom , FALCONS , Jolin Ras , and 8prn – in action. Just take our word for it- it would be a mistake to sleep on any of these acts.
The theme this year will revolve around “Living Labs” and you’ll have to join us there to understand how that will manifest in both visual and aural form. In that respect, we know as much as you do. A Festival Pass, which fortunately won’t break your wallet (it’s only $60 ), covers you for the entire weekend, French Electro Showcase and A/V installations included. Individual passes can be purchased as well and are all available at the official site here.
If you need any more incentive to attend, we’ve compiled a mixtape, available below, featuring a blend of some of the sounds you can expect to hear at New Forms 2012. We’re looking forward to seeing your faces there.

Just Incase you missed it, here is Shlohmo’s hour long DJ set from The Boiler Room Los Angeles . Personally, my favorite moments from the mix include Jeremih’s Fuck U All The Time , Ghost Town DJ’s My Boo , and a chopped and screwed rendition of the theme song from the late television show, All That .
If you like what you heard, make sure to pick up the free download on the Soundcloud widget.
Update: The audio for the Youtube video has been disabled due to some copyright issues- hopefully it’s back up soon.

Earlier today, Henry Laufer let go of his washed out version of Aaliyah and Drake ‘s “Enough Said.” The result is a “chopped and screwed” translation of Aaliyah’s posthumous single, which adheres that that slow-mo aesthetic Laufer has been fooling with for the past little while.
Basically me and my Wedidit brethren have been fucking around recently slowing down big room house tunes and old d&b and ’90s vocal house shit real, real slow. Like taking 160 BPM d&b tunes and screwing them down half speed to 80. Then we realized you could mash that shit with double time footwork stuff and it sounds real 2 us.

21-year-old Ryan Hemsworth is the latest member to join the “professionally unprofessional” Wedidit crew and when asked to describe his sound as a type of food, he probably couldn’t have given a better answer.
“Kitchen sink cookies, and well baked. There are a lot of artists making kitchen sink cookies and taking them out before the buzzer goes off or putting more than they should into them. Fresh buttery cookies off the pan into your ears.”

)
“Charly Wingate,” the first single to be let go from Hemsworth’s forthcoming EP Last Words, is a subtly sinister jam- a smoky, rap-smeared lullaby woven together by infectious beats that keep your head bobbing long after the song is though. Octave Abaji and Hector de la Vallee of the Fusils a Pompe Graphic Squad composed the accompanying video.
Last Words drops on August 21 st complete with reworks by Shlohmo and friends.

Yesterday, LA beatsmith Henry Laufer, who is currently touring/parading around Berlin and other European states, unveiled a podcast for Resident Advisor , dedicated to all those tracks that are just a little “too bizarre for the club.” As per usual, Laufer took his time on this one, spending just over a month to manipulate the tracks to his liking and giving them a proper Xanax’d rinse.
On RA.320 Laufer takes his previously stated love for chopped n screwed music, tilts back the heads of hip-hop, house, juke and R&B, and throws gallons of purple dark down their collective throats.
