Yesterday, accompanied by the sidenote “Life’s too fucking short,”
Forest Swords
unveiled the second track from his forthcoming LP,
Engravings
, due out August 26 via
Tri Angle Records
. Since his debut EP, Matthew Barnes has maintained a low profile, simultaneously producing for other artists, dealing with hearing problems, and planning his sophomore release. The product,
Engravings
, has been a year in the making and Barnes took his time with the album, which was supposedly mixed entirely outdoors “in the Wirral countryside on his laptop.” “The Weight of Gold” sees the producer intertwining dream-like disparate elements, much like he’s done with much of his previous work. However, this time around, Barnes seems to have refined his musical vision, allowing his pieces to unfold more slowly and doing so with confidence. Read the press release

Life moves and shifts but truth is the witness. Love always.

In 2010, Matthew Barnes released one of the most stunning genre-bending albums of the year under the moniker
Forest Swords
. Produced along the coastlines of the Wirral peninsula in England, Barnes’
Dagger Paths
E.P. echoed the organic tone of the sparsely industrialized landscape in which it was created. And in the plethora of bloggers’ “Best of 2010” lists,
Dagger Paths
was consistently placed in the top tier.
Since then, Barnes has remained rather reclusive, surfacing only behind the scenes to work with artists such as
How To Dress Well
and
Haleek Maul
on their recent releases. However, a few days ago, Barnes reintroduced himself with an original piece that will be present on his alleged forthcoming full-length on
Tri Angle Records
. Reminiscent of his previous work, “Thor’s Stone” is densely textured, boasting thundering percussion, hazy yet fiery vocal snippets, and piano stabs soaked in reverb.

By the time
Holy Other
takes to the road for his North American tour this fall, his debut LP will already be playing on repeat, or so we anticipate. On August 28th,
Held
will be released on none other than
Tri Angle Records
and the second taste of the album continues to bode well for what’s to come. (The excellent “Love Some1,” the first song we heard from
Held
, has been floating around for just over a month.)
The title track, which was revealed today, is a sprawling, expansive tune that stays true to the moody and melancholic aura that the producer has crystallized as his characteristic sonic atmosphere.

[Artwork for the 'With U' EP]
Holy Other
is a Manchester born Witch-House producer who is currently signed to
Tri Angle Records
. He has been reported to spend time between London, Manchester, Berlin, Gothenburg and even Osaka. Much like Burial, Holy Other plays the mysterious card, letting his music speak predominantly for itself. His production started a year ago with remixes for the likes of
How to Dress Well
,
Asobi Seksu
and
Walls
. Holy Other is known for his ambient goth vibe and pitched down 90′s R&B vocal samples. The music below provides cases to this point.
“My aesthetic is shifty. I’ve usually been doing it in some bedroom somewhere, wherever it is. I haven’t written any music in Manchester, any music in the UK really at all. I’ve just been abroad the whole time. There hasn’t been a solid location. I can’t really say I’ve been holed up in a studio for months, because it’s just not true. So I guess it’s that I’m moving around, and that I’m influenced by things that are happening around me, rather than just staying in the same location, having the same themes about everything.”
