Flowers & Sea Creatures | Afternoons and Afterhours

To share with you today we have an exclusive preview of Afternoons & Afterhours EP from Montréal’s Flowers & Sea Creatures via Toronto-based My Favourite Robot Records . The producers have released music in the past via Compost and Buzzin’ Fly .

Upon a first listen through, the a-side cuts–”The Very Next Day” and “So Far The Star”–jumped out at me. Both artfully blend machine-soul soul with human-soul. They layer bittersweet falsettos over warm moody synthesizers and metronomic drum machines.

B1 “Alternate Endings” traverses into ambient territory incorporating live piano and guitar peformances. The vocals and the overall sound of the production on this particular cut bear a striking resemblance to Thom Yorke’s work. I don’t think it would be a stretch to surmise that they took some cues from Radiohead on this one.

B2 “Citadel” draws us in with warm vibrato synth brass, a deep driving square-wave bass-line, soft nylon-stringed acoustic guitar arpeggios, and a steady snare roll that suspends us in anticipation throughout the trip. This one took me a few listens to appreciate its depth.

Can’t wait for more music from Flowers & Sea Creatures .
