Dense & Pika | Crispy Duck EP [HFT027]

This heavy interpretation of the contemporary techno movement is most appropriately introduced by the minds behind the Hotflush Soundcloud account:

“Breaking onto the scene in 2011 with a series of hand-stamped white label 12-inches, anonymous duo Dense & Pika re-emerge for their debut on Scuba ‘s Hotflush Recordings.

‘Crispy Duck,’ their 3-track take on modern underground techno, kicks off with a chugging A side, giving serious nods to Detroit and beyond with it’s deadly shuffle. On the flip, Dense and Pika claim the dancefloor with ‘Coil’ a tripped out up-tempo techno track, abound with hi-hats and fist-pumps, followed by ’31′, a rough and ready tune that melds 4/4 with acid and dub grooves. Doing their best to remain incognito, the duo are on course to make 2013 their year.”

Our favorite cut on the record is, without doubt, the title track.

Stream clips from the entire release, below;

Dense & Pika ‘s Crispy Duck EP will be out via Hotflush on December 3rd 2012.

Bok Bok & Girl Unit | Live @ Heaven Nightclub

Last week, at Heaven Nightclub in London, Night Slugs cohorts Bok Bok & Girl Unit performed what seems to be an increasingly rare feat – a truly live set – without once setting fingers on a computer, tables, or CDJ’s. Forgoing what have truly become the norm in the arena of live electronic music, these brash englishmen instead created every sound live – relying on an arsenal of analogue equipment; an MPC, TR909, Sequential Circuits Drumtraks, Juno 106, Polysix and FX.

It’s a joy to hear these beatsmiths work with and against their equipment – their talents paradoxically limited and enhanced by the constraints of their chosen media. These struggles ensure that the tracks played out aren’t merely facsimile copies of their computer generated brethren – they become as the artists put it “bespoke versions” – tailor made to their equipment’s exacting demands.

Disclosure | Lividup (Waze & Odyssey Remix)

[Disclosure]

Waze & Odyssey haven’t carried out a drastic overhaul with their remix of Disclosure’s “Lividup” from their smash debut EP The Face. Nevertheless, I think this adaptation is definitely worth listening to. It’s a little bit meaner than the original .

If you’re raving to this, be sure to cop a free download from Greco Roman here .

Justin Jay | Dirtybird Halloweend Mix

Dirtybird Records continues to showcase its stacked roster with this hour of unabashed funk from 19 year old prodigy Justin Jay . Jam-packed with cuts varying from Justin Martin’s retouches of recent label signee French Fries ; Eats Everything ‘s Trubble ; Julio Bashmore side project Velour ‘s The Scent of Romance , and of course a few original tracks from the man behind the controls.

While the mix forgoes halloween classics like The Monster Mash , the beats here are definitely spooky enough to fuel your ghoulish weekend’s festivities.

Good Kid m.A.A.d. City | Black Hippy Remixes

Perhaps the only thing more exciting than Kendrick Lamar ‘s splendid album dropping today are the new remixes coming out of the Black Hippy camp. Available on an exclusive release through American retail giant Target, these splendid posse cuts showcase the wealth of skill at work within Kendrick’s crew.

With Kendrick at the helm, and Ab-Soul , Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock snapping hungrily at his heels, the Black Hippy boys have certainly made their case as the most talented clique in hip-hop.

Stream both tracks below, and cop the exclusive Target issue of the album here .

Fulgeance | Step Thru LP

For those of you who remember Fulgeance ‘s 2010 Glamoure EP , your excitement is surely palpable at the mere sight of the Caen France native’s name. While he has undoubtedly stayed busy since that release with two solid LPs and a handful of EPs, nothing has quite caught our ears in the same fashion as Glamoure did until now.

The primary reason for this is growth. While a track like Raw employs similar production tactics to his earlier work (with masterful effect), Step Thru ‘s greatest moments come with the Frenchman stepping out of his comfort zone. Wet, for instance, is a massive slice of seismic funk far heavier than any of Fulgeance’s previous work, and this trunk-rattling swagger suits him well.

Bat For Lashes | All Your Gold (Hercules & Love Affair Remix)

Ever since their phenomenal 2008 eponymous debut, New York’s Hercules & Love Affair have delicately walked the line between disco and house, yet all the while maintaining their dripping, melancholic sound.

Their latest work, a retake of Bat For Lashes All Your Gold is without a doubt the most straightforward house release for the DFA signees, and it’s bouncy rhythms and jangling keys slough off Hercules & Love Affair’s usually sombre mantle with ease.

NYC 73-78 (Beck Rework) | Philip Glass

At last, we see a glimpse of the bold project “ Rework: Philip Glass Remixed .” With a team of artists that includes Amon Tobin , Nosaj Thing , Memory Tapes, Dan Deacon , and others, our expectations were certainly high.

Beck ‘s rework does not disappoint – spanning an epic twenty plus minutes, Bek David Campbell’s contribution to the album is a carefully curated selection of Glass’s hugely influential work – stitched together with snippets of Campbell‘s own voice and wild percussion, like a patchwork quilt.

While it’s lengthy running time and experimental nature may seem daunting, the piece rewards the listener with intricate, mathematic rhythms and delicate harmonies.

Mount Kimbie | Resident Advisor Mix

From the duo behind the widely-appreciated Crooks and Lovers LP (2010) on Hot Flush, here is a not-so-recent mix for Resident Advisor. We haven’t heard from these Londoners since the Carbonated EP (2011). We look forward to hearing some fresh original material in the near future.

The Underachievers | Gold Soul Theory

Brainfeeder ‘s eminent lineup grows. Enter The Underachievers . These New York City cats are on that otherworldly tip and toting third-eye awareness like an uzi. There are also plenty of blunts, drugs and bitches for everyone but served with a mystical twist.

Their styles profess expanded consciousness as the goal of drug experimentation and moving the masses as the purpose of the elevated soul. One could go so far as to proclaim a new kind of mantra for these guys: “Fuck Bitche$ Get Enlightened.”

Stay tuned for the upcoming release entitled INDIGO.S.M.  Video for Herb Shuttles directed and edited by Thisisbutta .

This first track “Gold Soul Theory”, directed by Yasha Gruben, is what caught FlyLo’s attention.

Flying Lotus | Until The Quiet Comes LP

Steve Ellison’s latest opus, Until the Quiet Comes , the widely anticipated full-length follow-up to his lauded Cosmogramma LP, drops tomorrow on Warp . Ellison takes us on a tour through lush, glimmering, ephemeral altered states of consciousness–(Listen to “Dream to Me” and “Until The Colours Come.”)

His grooves and melodies on tracks like “Putty Boy Strut,” “Sultan’s Request” and “Nightcaller” reflect a child-like looseness, mischieviousness, and sense of humour. Ellison’s smoky melancholic jazz-moods are prevalent in “Only If You Wanna,” “Hunger”, and “Phantasm.”

Fly Lo calls on a handful of gifted peers for guest appearances– including Erykah Badu, Niki Randa, Laura Darlington, and Thom Yorke. Thundercat’s deft bass dances on a handful of tracks.

Flying Lotus will be commencing a world tour Oct. 1st beginning with a handful of dates in L.A. and N.Y.C.

You can stream the entire album from NPR here . Also, you can catch an interview with Flying Lotus on the Gilles Peterson show this week on BBC Radio 6.

Plays:Four | Lay Doe EP

Plays.Four is a three-piece from Vancouver consisting of Samuel Beatch, Ellis Sam, and Jonathan Scherk. The Lay Doe EP displays rich textures and shuffling rhythms perfect for autumn day listening. Freg (g) is a standout track for me, which showcases a more dancefloor-ready tempo than the rest of tunes on the EP.

These young gentlemen have been generous enough to give us Lay Doe at not cost– grab it below.

John Talabot | Mai Mes // Tragedial

Yesterday, Barcelona export John Talabot released two new tracks via his Soundcloud . Mai Mes and Tragedial, both exempted from his phenomenal February release “Fin,” they will be featured on a split 7″ exclusively available for purchase on his Canada-U.S. tour with the XX.

Clearly a result of the process that produced Fin, these tracks share the woozy, hypnagogic qualities that  drew us to Talabot’s work last winter.

Chet Faker | Terms & Conditions (Nicolas Jaar Remix)

Nicolas Jaar extended his markedly unblemished track record today, releasing a wonderfully subterranean retake of one of Australian Chet Baker ‘s latest.

Jaar’s touch drags you deep below the earth’s mantle – to caverns with echoing percussion, whistling and hissing with raw noise, the caves shifting disorientingly  in mood and tempo as you descend along the six minute piece.

Happy spelunking -

Trimbal & Harmonimix | [RS1210]

[Harmonimix & Trimbal]

James Blake under the discreet alias, Harmonimix, has previously worked with former grime collective Roll Deep member, Trimbal . Confidence Boost and Saying are two tracks that have resulted in the collaboration stated above. For the past two years, the pair of songs have been yearned for by Dj’s and audiophiles alike; and today R&S Records digitally and physically released the couple as an EP, RS1210 .

Here is how R&S describe the recordings:

“On ‘Confidence Boost’ Trim’s vocals are pitched and twisted over gliding chords and a beat that harks back to the dark basements of Plastic People where James’s musical journey began.  Whilst over a classic grime rhythm and shuffling stabs of white noise Trim’s half rapping half talking flow swaggers across ‘Saying’ with the track building to syncopated crescendo before descending into an intense sub workout.”

With Confidence Boost comes visual accompaniment.

The White Lamp | Make it Good

Gilles Peterson is a reliable source of golden music from all over the map– This tune was the stand-out for me on the G.P. show this week.

The White Lamp ‘s new soulful dance single “Make it Good” conjures up a euphoric buzz reminiscent of the sun-drenched days of summer. “Make it Good” is due for release Oct. 22nd on Berlin-based imprint Sonar Kollectiv .
