a lighter head for your heavy heart

Introducing | Guadalupe Plata

Guadalupe Plata , directly translated, is a Spanish saint and guardian that is covered in a glimmering silver luster. Initially, the duo formed in Ubeda, Spain: Pedro de Dios Barcelo sang and wailed on the slide guitar while Carlos Jimena provided hypnotic, sluggish drumbeats. Later on, a third was added: Pacos Luis Martos who wielded a badass, self-crafted bass guitar. This primitave instrument consists of a handmade washtub, a lumber stick, and a chainsaw thread. The product of these three minds is muddy and rugged rock n roll oozing with a Southern blues flavor. Guadalupe Plata gives life to a genre of music that most thought was squeezed dry around 60 years ago by the likes of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins , Skip James and Muddy Waters . When asked what the bands’ biggest vice was in an interview with Spinner Magazine , they responded with:

“a very particular vice that consists in punching each other as if we were possessed, sticking our tongues out and biting the knife before using it. It is a very ancient tradition performed in Jaen’s villages. “

The trio has 2 albums in their repertoire, both self-titled and out for free download; one released in 2009 and the other in 2011. The sounds of Guadalupe Plata invoke an electrifying energy in me that no other form of music can create. They were last spotted playing a “killer” set at SXSW last week.  Here are my cherished favorites from the band-

Cementario – Guadalupe Plata (2009) [rock n' roll] [recommended]

Lorena – Guadalupe Plata (2011) [rock n' roll] [recommended]

Estoy Roto – Guadalupe Plata (2011) [rock n' roll] [recommended]

The band has all of their material listed either as free, or on a “name your price”  basis, here.
I highly recommend you add the soulful lot to your collection-
