8prn & PIZZASLIME | Back 2 u

artworks-000059176824-ph9b90-t500x500

“Back 2 U” is the bastard child of 8prn and PIZZASLIME

The duo layers warm bass stabs, barely decipherable chopped & re-pitched vocal snippets drenched in verb’ and a mental squiggly lead-synth riff over top a pulsing four-to-the-floor groove…

Mount Kimbie | You Took Your Time (Kyle Hall remix)

artworks-000058534548-chko9q-t500x500

artworks-000058534548-chko9q-t500x500

Detroit’s Kyle Hall delivers a warm and crunchy re-intepretation of Mount Kimbie ‘s “You Took Your Time”. This remix will be featured on the CSFLY remix compilation forthcoming at the end of this month on Warp .

Invisible Conga People | In a Hole (Tennis edit)

artworks-000058956301-xxweb5-t500x500

I just discovered this Berlin-based producer–Mr. Manifredi Romano a.k.a. Tennis , Life & Death, and Self Portrait.

This edit of Invisible Conga People ‘s “In A Hole” is deep, weird, soulful in the best senses of the words…

Vampire Weekend | Diane Young (Candidat remix)

avatars-000048272865-8izh6h-t500x500

It’s not often that we post submissions. One reason for that is because I don’t stay on top of the inbox.

However, this morning I received a message from Candidat with a link to this song and I’m glad that I happened to open it. This is delightful candy-coated funky feel-good french-house. Candidat slices Ezra Koenig’s giddy boyish vocals from the outro of “Diane Young” into staccato lead riffs, rendering the original lyrics undecipherable. And I hope you have a subwoofer wired up when you press play because the low-end on this mix is full and deep.

So you know, this one is also for free download

Dusky | Careless

artworks-000058148671-dpavtp-t500x500

artworks-000058148671-dpavtp-t500x500

Out now on AUS music, this is the title track from Dusky ‘s Careless EP… Dusky delivers an infectious bass riff that dances with the rhythm of the re-pitched vocal snippets “everything” “I” “want you” “yeah” “true” over top of a steady four-to-the-floor groove.

mmm tastes so sweet…

Drake | Too Much ft. Sampha (Jason Burns & Jessie Andrews remix)

artworks-000058467993-xtxzu7-t500x500 (1)

Jason Burns and Jessie Andrews put together this infectious future bass uk-house re-interpretation of Drake’s “Too Much” featuring Sampha . Burns and Andrews leave Drake out of the equation and shine the spotlight on Sampha’s angelic falsetto.

This jam is pretty undeniable. As one SoundCloud commentator, Vick the God, put it, “I love this shit, and I don’t even fuck with techno.”

Don’t forget to snatch up the free download if you’re feeling it.

Daughter | Youth (Lane 8 remix)

artworks-000056340781-igw0x9-t500x500

San Francisco’s Lane 8 put together this soulful tech-house adaptation of Daughter’s melancholic ballad “Youth” .

It came out month ago and I slept on it, but I just came across it yesterday and decided it was worth sharing with you… (Don’t forget to cop the free download if the tune resonates with you!)

Maceo Plex took the liberty of remixing Sound Stream ‘s “Love Jam” and he has graciously made the final product available for free download…

Disclosure | Help Me Lose My Mind (Paul Woolford remix)

avatars-000030053262-21m28s-t500x500

Paul Woolford has taken what is easily the least appealing track for me on Disclosure ‘s sensational debut Settle LP, “Help Me Lose My Mind” featuring London Grammar, and re-arranged it into something much more compelling. No disrespect to the enormously talented brothers behind Disclosure ; they set the bar for themselves pretty high with tracks like “Confess To Me” and “When a Fire Stars to Burn” and the tracks from The Face EP. This remix will be available soon via Island / PMR .

COMA | Les Dilettantes (Roosevelt mix)

artworks-000058143530-b9jqqz-t500x500

Out now on Kompakt , Roosevelt ‘s take on COMA’s “Les Dilettantes” is a slow-burning bittersweet disco pop jam session.

George Fitzgerald | I Can Tell (Paul Woolford remix)

DJ and producer Paul Woolford

Out soon via Double Six , both in mp3 as well as in 12″ format, here is Paul Woolford ‘s re-interpretation of George Fitzgerald ‘s anthemic house single “I Can Tell” .

Woolford strips away most of the vocal, the chords, and melody, and instead morphs rhythmic piano riffs over top of the rhythm section in order to develop the arrangement. Make sure to hang on until around 3:07 to experience the main turning point in the track.

Vancouver’s 8prn took his time to refine this cheeky re-interpretation of “Never” from Koreless ‘s Yugen EP debut on Young Turks . Armed with his trusty 808 kit, 8prn has injected momentum and groove into Lewis Roberts’s g ently evolving sparse melodic synth lullaby.

Gold Panda | Community (Fort Romeau remix)

For his latest LP release entitled Half Of Where You Live , out now on No Town and Ghostly , Gold Panda commissioned Fort Romeau to remix one of the tracks.

With his re-interpretation of “ Community “, Fort Romeau delivers a deep progressive house odyssey that evolves organically over eight and a half minutes. Don’t hold your breath waiting for ‘the drop’… This one requires patience.

Out now on I/AM/ME , this is the third track from Maya Jane Coles ‘s debut full-length entitled Comfort .

HUMANS | De Ciel (Thomas Cade remix)

artworks-000053000345-xewy49-t500x500

Thomas Cade , a young producer who splits his time between Toronto, Canada, and London, UK, went to work on Humans’ “De Ciel” and came up with this tough remix.

At this point in time, “dubstep” is a dirty word for a lot of folks. Nevertheless, Cade seems to have few qualms with respect to integrating certain distinctive elements of the style into his sound on this cut. Rhythmically, the track is driven by a menacing half-step groove with a big reverberant snare on the ’3′ and warm synths that pulsate with side-chain compression. When the soulful vocal hook from “De Ciel” kicks in around 1:31, I find myself squinting and raising my trigger finger high.

If you are in B.C. this weekend, you can catch Humans performing at Bass Coast in Merritt.

Cyril Hahn | Raw Cut

artworks-000054105660-0ddfqq-t500x500

This Vancouver-based Swiss electronic dance producer grabbed our attention with his dynamite bootleg version of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” .

On “Raw Cut”, Hahn delivers warm soothing melodic synths and soulful vocal snippets drenched in a spacious reverb over top a steady 4/4 disco house groove. Make sure you hold out patiently until 2:00 for the introduction of an infectious triplet lead guitar riff, which ties the whole track together. “Raw Cut” is coming out July 10th on PMR .

Jacques Greene | Faithful

jacques-greene

“Faithful” is a deep bittersweet soulful concoction. Jacques Greene has been faithful to us in the sense that he consistently delivers the goods. Almost every production he touches is worth listening to–and coming back to–again and again. This cut is no exception. So without further introduction…

This one is out now digitally on LuckyMe –and there is a limited run of vinyl available as well…

Oh yeah–and here is the official video…

Dense & Pika | Move Your Body Back EP

artworks-000051353165-dzyht3-t500x500

Following up “ Crispy Duck “, Chris Spero (otherwise known as UK house and techno producer Glimpse ) and Hypercolour co-founder and producer, Alex Jones, return as Dense & Pika with a new EP entitled Move Your Body Back for Hot Flush Recordings .

A1. Move Your Body Back
B1. Lack of Light
B2. Backstage Mute

The duo delivers unapologetically cold stripped-down functionalist warehouse rave techno. Their percussion-centric sound is marked by the sparseness of melodic content. Part of the appeal for me is the way the hypnotic repetition of driving machine rhythms and fragmented speech induces a trance-like psychological state.

They played the title track on their Resident Advisor podcast in March and it is receiving support from the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Boddika and Adam Beyer, amongst others.

Kidnap Kid | Survive

artworks-000051910821-6hahje-t500x500

“Survive” is the B-side off Kidnap Kid ‘s “Thin Lines” release, which was released only few days ago via Black Butter Records . The polished deep house cut is yet another testament to this young Sheffield-based producer’s keen dance pop sensibilities.

8prn | Cunha EP

artworks-000050918477-j5f40t-t500x500

Tristan da Cunha is a tiny isle in the South Atlantic, which is supposedly the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world–lying over 2,800 kilometres from the nearest land-mass. Patrick Holland tried to make it there in a sailboat once, but ultimately never set foot on its shores. “It’s a tough island to get to,” he says.

Vancouver’s Patrick Holland, a.k.a. 8prn , has kept busy in the studio in recent months despite the multitude of events he has been playing around town… Following up his debut Time Waste EP on Jellyfish and his Over It EP on Blenheim & Celtic as well as a string of remixes and bootlegs, he just self-released his third EP entitled Cunha . (It is available for free download here .)

On Cunha , Holland moves into left-field four-to-the-floor dance domains. When asked what factors led him in this sonic direction, Holland commented, “I wanted to switch it up and work with rhythms that I had never used before–I was listening to a lot of Four Tet, Shadow Child, and Joy Orbison.”

A1 begins with a bath in euphoria as the intro heaves and swells foreshadowing the arrival of cheeky vocal snippets from Outkast’s “Roses” cheerful synth melodies and the driving thump of the kick drum. Around three minutes, the track breaks down and the mood takes a sinister turn–elation fades away as quickly as it bubbles up in the opening moments of the track and gives way to blood-boiling surging anxiety.

B1 is reminiscent of Four Tet ‘s work in a handful of ways–the way the arrangement slowly builds momentum as it unfolds–the triplet synth arpeggios–the repetitious use of indecipherable vocal snippets. All of this considered, this is no mere copy-cat effort. While certain elements of the track undeniably pay homage to Mr. Hebden, Holland’s endearingly devilish sense of humour shines through and distinguishes him from his influences on this record.

Given that each of Holland’s subsequent releases since his debut has ventured down a different sonic avenue, one thing we can feel pretty confident about with respect to his future work is that he will be moving into uncharted territory.
